| That hideous analogue vs digital paradox faces every audio professional: the musicality of high quality analogue circuits vs the low noise and clean sound of digital audio. What to do? The philosophy at DAD is that ‘if a source, like a Stradivarius, is perfect it shouldn’t be messed with.’ Jumping off their high digital horses the boffins at DAD set about putting the theory into ones and zeros. Their experiments led to sample rates, the key parameter in the conversion process. Starting at 96 kHz the golden ears felt they could hear a difference, even at 176.4 and 192 kHz there were differences. But finally at an incredible 362.8 kHz the game was up, the original dynamics, transients, true harmonics, sound stage depth and perspective, and most of all the feeling and emotion were all there just like the original. The AX24 converter system is the result. It's a card and frame type set-up which can be configured with a combination of up to 8 input or output channels. The system offers A/D and D/A conversion in PCM up to 384 kHz, DSD at 64fs (2.8224 MHz) or 128fs (5.6448 MHz) and DXD at a sample-rate of 352.8 kHz and as such covers applications for music recording as well as mastering and monitoring in DSD. |
